One of Maine’s original and most historically-rich transportation modes remains a reliable, economical and comfortable travel option today. The Downeaster, Amtrak’s sleek, new passenger train serving Northern New England, provides four round trips daily between the Portland Transportation Center and Boston's North Station, with eight stops in between:

STATIONS:

On board you can relax and watch the beautiful New England scenery outside your window, while enjoying sandwiches, snacks and drinks available from the Café Car. The trip between Boston and Portland takes approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes. Downeaster stops have inter-modal transportation facilities so you can easily continue on to Bar Harbor, Acadia, Kennebunkport, Freeport, and scores of other Maine destinations. The Portland Transportation Center also serves as the main terminal for Concord Trailways.

Be sure to visit the Smart Alternative site. As The Partnership for A Smart Alternative, the Maine Department of Transportation, the Maine Turnpike Authority and the New Hampshire Department of Transportation have joined forces to build and sustain awareness of alternative transportation options along the I-95 corridor between Bangor and Boston. http://www.smartalternative.org/

Park & Ride. MDOT and the Maine Turnpike Authority maintain Park and Ride parking lots where travelers leave their vehicles, and where commuters can connect with car and vanpools.
