Private and state-run ferry services provide a vital link to Maine’s many island communities. International ferries provide service to Canada from ports in Bar Harbor, Eastport and Portland.

Downeast & Acadia

Bar Harbor Ferry. The M/V Sequin and the M/V Schoodic provide seasonal service between Bar Harbor and Winter Harbor, Maine.

The CAT. Operated seasonally by Bay Ferries, Ltd., The Cat is the fastest car ferry in North America. Designed for ocean conditions, the Cat carries up to 900 passengers and 240 cars across the Gulf of Maine, traveling between Bar Harbor and Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, in 2hrs 45 min. Service is available from mid-May to mid-October.

Maine State Ferry Service
Operated by the Maine Department of Transportation, provides fixed-route ferry service from Bass Harbor to Swans Island and Frenchboro. The Ferry Service operates year round.

Quoddy Loop Ferries. The Quoddy Loop, a "two-nation vacation" loop between points in Maine and New Brunswick, Canada, relies on a series of ferries. These vessels transport travelers and vehicles among five islands and Blacks Harbour on the New Brunswick mainland. Islands serviced include:

East Coast Ferries Ltd.
Visitors to the Campobello area who wish to continue on to the New Brunswick mainland can save nearly 100 driving miles by hopping on the M.V. "Island Hopper." Save nearly 50 driving miles from the Eastport area aboard the M.V. "Fundy Trail."

Isle au Haut Mail Boat
The Isle Au Haut mailboats offer passenger and freight service between Stonington and Isle au Haut, excursions for sightseers and seasonal service to Acadia National Park at Duck Harbor.

Greater Portland & Casco Bay


Casco Bay Lines.
Owned and operated by the Casco Bay Island Transit District, provides public fixed-route ferry service from Portland to six islands in Casco Bay. Casco Bay Lines operates seven days a week, 365 days a year. Islands served by Casco Bay Line:

Service Area: Portland to Casco Bay Cumberland. This municipal ferry line operates daily, year-round service between islands in Casco Bay, from its mainland terminal, the Maine State Pier, in Portland.

Chebeague Transportation. The Chebeauge Transportation Company operates a ferry between Chebeague Island in Casco Bay and Cousins Island. Cousins Island is connected to mainland Yarmouth, Maine by a bridge. The ferry takes about 15 minutes each way.

Scotia Prince. The Scotia Prince leaves Portland’s International Marine terminal in the evening at 8 PM EST and arrives in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, at 9 AM AST the next morning. Operated by Prince of Fundy Lines, the Scotia Prince carries up to 200 vehicles and is available from mid-May to mid-October.

Maine Lakes & Mountains


Frye Island Ferry.
The Frye Island Ferry provides seasonal service to the residents of Frye Island in Sebago Lake. Mainland access to the ferry is from Raymond Neck, in Raymond, Maine. The ferry typically operates between June and September.
