In the westernmost portion of Maine, the mountains are part of the Appalachian Mountain range that stretches along the entire east coast of the United States. In the Maine Lakes & Mountains region, visitors enjoy the outdoors year-round. Travelers can explore this beautiful area by air, bus, bike - or along several scenic byways.

Air Taxi/Charter Airports
Auburn-Lewiston
This airport serves Maine's second largest city, located on the Androscoggin River, and features a full-service restaurant.

Bethel Regional Airport
The Bethel area is a four-season vacation destination. Also offers access to Gould Academy.

Eastern Slopes Regional Airport
Located in Fryeburg, which offers easy access to the Mt. Washington Valley, Maine's Western Mountains and Fryeburg Academy.

Naples Seaplane Base
A busy summer lake town, offering scenic flights over the lakes.

Oxford County Regional Airport
Serves Oxford County's aviation needs.

Rangeley Lake Seaplane Base
Provides access to the Rangeley Lakes and Mountains region and sporting camps.

Stephen A. Bean Municipal Airport
Located in Maine's beautiful Rangeley Lakes region.

Sugarloaf Regional Airport
Access to skiing and golfing at Sugarloaf/USA.

Twitchell Airport & Seaplane Base
Offers first-rate seaplane instruction.

Maine Lakes & Mountains by Bus
Lisbon Connection. Serving Lisbon, Lisbon Center and Lisbon Falls with daily round trips to Lewiston. 207-777-4583

Mountain Explorer. A free shuttle service operating between Bethel Village and Sunday River Ski Resort, linking restaurants, inns and shopping areas in between.

Western Maine Transportation Services.
Owned by the Lewiston-Auburn Transit Committee (LATC), provides public fixed-route bus service in the Lewiston-Auburn area. LATC contracts with Western Maine Transportation Services, Inc., to operate and maintain the fixed-route bus system, as well as, provide ADA complementary paratransit service. Citylink operates Monday through Friday.

Maine Lakes & Mountains by Car
The Maine Lakes & Mountains region features numerous scenic byways, which wind along mountain passes, down river valleys and through wooded forests. Wildlife viewing is abundant, and these drives showcase Maine's spectacular fall foliage.

Maine Lakes & Mountains by Ferry
Frye Island Ferry. The Frye Island Ferry provides seasonal service to the residents of Frye Island in Sebago Lake. Mainland access to the ferry is from Raymond Neck, in Raymond, Maine. The ferry typically operates between June and September.


Connections to Train
The closest train station from the Maine Lakes and Mountains region is The Downeaster train station in Portland.

Maine Department of Transportation
Park and Ride Park & Ride. MDOT and the Maine Turnpike Authority maintain Park and Ride parking lots where travelers leave their vehicles, and where commuters can connect with car and vanpools.
