The Downeast & Acadia Region is famous for its rocky shoreline, scenic harbors and mountains-to-the sea views. This area also is home to Acadia National Park, the most frequently visited location in Maine. The region offers visitors numerous ways to explore and preserve its natural beauty.


Downeast & Acadia by Air
Hancock County-Bar Harbor Airport (BHB). Located between Ellsworth and Bar Harbor, this convenient, year-round facility services Maine's Downeast coastal region and one of American's most visited national parks, Acadia National Park.

Air Taxi/Charter Airports
Belfast Municipal Airport
The Belfast airport is located in the heart of Coastal Maine.

Eastport Municipal Airport
This airport serves one of the last unspoiled stretches of Maine's coast.

Lubec Airport
Serves Lubec and Washington County in Downeast Maine.

Machias Valley Airport
The Machias Bay area features numerous picturesque harbors and towns, with excellent recreational opportunities.

Princeton Municipal Airport
Provides access to numerous sporting camps and pristine lakes.

Stonington Municipal Airport
This island features a cluster of quiet communities.


Downeast & Acadia by Bike

Bustling towns, scenic harbors, picturesque bayscapes, delightful villages and spectacular mountains-to-the-sea views make Downeast hugely popular among cyclists. The region is home to breathtaking Acadia National Park, as well as numerous easily reached islands. Click here for more information.


Downeast & Acadia by Bus

Island Explorer. Free seasonal shuttle service linking hotels, inns and campgrounds on Mount Desert Island, with destinations in Acadia National Park and neighboring village centers.

Downeast Transportation. A private, non-profit agency that operates deviated fixed-route public bus service in Hancock County. Areas served by fixed-route bus include Ellsworth, all of Mount Desert Island, the Blue Hill peninsula including Brooklin, Sedgwick, Deer Isle and Stonington, the northern Hancock County town of Otis, the coastal towns of Hancock, Sullivan, Gouldsboro and Winter Harbor in eastern Hancock County, and the Town of Bucksport in western Hancock County.

Pleasant Point Transportation
Operates a public bus service between the Pleasant Point Indian Reservation and downtown Calais on Wednesday thru Friday.

West Transportation
West's Transportation is a private for-profit corporation that provides fixed-route and demand response public transportation service to communities within Washington county and eastern portions of Hancock County. Intercity service is provided between Calais and Bangor (named Coastal Connection) with stops in Washington and Hancock Counties along the way.

Vermont Transit offers fast bus service to New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Eastern Canada.

Downeast & Acadia by Car
The Downeast & Acadia region is home numerous scenic byways, which offer visitors glimpses into small, coastal villages ripe with wild blueberries - and the open waters surrounding Mount Desert Island and Acadia National Park.

Downeast & Acadia by Ferry

Bar Harbor Ferry. The M/V Sequin and the M/V Schoodic provide seasonal service between Bar Harbor and Winter Harbor, Maine.

Beal & Bunker. Year-round service, leaving from the Northeast Harbor Town Dock.

The CAT. Operated seasonally by Bay Ferries, Ltd., The Cat is the fastest car ferry in North America. Designed for ocean conditions, the Cat carries up to 900 passengers and 240 cars across the Gulf of Maine, traveling between Bar Harbor and Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, in 2hrs 45 min. Service is available from mid-May to mid-October.

East Coast Ferries. Visitors to the Campobello area who wish to continue on to the New Brunswick mainland can save nearly 100 driving miles by hopping on the M.V. "Island Hopper". Save nearly 50 driving miles from the Eastport area aboard the M.V. "Fundy Trail."

Isle au Haut Mail Boat. The Isle Au Haut mailboats offer passenger and freight service between Stonington and Isle au Haut, excursions for sightseers and seasonal service to Acadia National Park at Duck Harbor.

Quoddy Loop Ferries. The Quoddy Loop, a "two-nation vacation" loop between points in Maine and New Brunswick, Canada, relies on a series of ferries. These vessels transport travelers and vehicles among five islands and Blacks Harbour on the New Brunswick mainland. Islands serviced include:

  • Campobello Island
  • Deer Island
  • Grand Manan
  • White Head Island
  • Moose Island, Eastport, Maine
Maine State Ferry Service. This state ferry line transports travelers from Bass Harbor on Mount Desert Island to Swans Island and Frenchboro.
