Distance: 45, 67, and 92 mile loops
Terrain: Flat to rolling
This is the land where lumber was once king, as each town and village along this 92-mile ride serves as a reminder. The ride follows the Penobscot River from Bangor to Howland before swinging west along the Piscataquis River and finally south through the agricultural land of western Penobscot County. Old dams, mills and farms dot the countryside, and there are many points of interest along the way. The Bangor Historical Society publishes a guide for a walking tour of the historic buildings in downtown Bangor. The Leonards Mills Museum in Bradley, a reconstruction of a 19th Century sawmill, should not be missed. In addition, there are numerous opportunities for wildlife viewing along the way.
This tour is ideal for cyclists equipped for long distances between services. Two shorter loops of 45- and 67-miles including stops in Old Town and Pushaw Lake are provided. Even on these shortened loops, there’s still a considerable distance between services in the middle section of the loops.
