Ellsworth to Calais
Distance: 140 miles.
Cycle through the heart of Downeast Maine, from Ellsworth, gateway to Acadia, to Calais, situated on the St. Croix River, which divides Maine from New Brunswick, Canada. The route offers an unforgettable combination of the best of rural Maine and its small towns and villages, dramatic coastal scenery, blueberry barrens and bald eagles. Side trips along the way include the reversing tidal falls in Sullivan Falls, Schoodic Pennisula in the easternmost part of Acadia National Park (see Bike Tour #6), and the Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge. The historic towns of Machias and Calais have busy commercial centers, with restaurants and services, and offer an interesting glimpse of life in Downeast Maine. Calais is the finish line of Maine's East Coast Greenway.
