Dexter
207-924-7102

Dexter is located along the Moosehead Trail (Route 7) in the southwestern portion of Penobscot County, about 30 miles northwest of Bangor. The Moosehead Trail takes travelers from I-95 in Newport north toward Dover-Foxcroft and the Moosehead Lake Region, but not without offering broad views of the recreational and commercial offerings of Dexter.

Lake Wassookeag, a 1,062 acre lake, named by the Penobscot Indians for "shining water," borders the business district. The lake is a destination for fishermen in summer and winter. Dexter also has a municipal 9-hole golf course and driving range, a public beach, camping and picnic areas and a small regional airport. Snowmobiling, fishing, watersports, and hunting are popular activities. Dexter is the original home and namesake of the world famous Dexter Shoe Company.
